Chemistry: Level 3

Qualification - NCEA Level 3

Course Outline

Level 3 Chemistry is a course that aims to extend the understanding of fundamental chemical concepts and is designed to provide an opportunity to discuss the impact of Chemistry on everyday life.

The course provides a body of knowledge suitable for students who will not continue Chemistry as well as for those who intend to study the subject at tertiary level.

Students will be offered a course with 19 or 21 credits.

Students will be expected to purchase a textbook, which will be used in conjunction with the teaching.

Topics covered include organic and inorganic substances, redox reactions, spectroscopy, thermochemical principles, properties of particles and substances, and equilibrium principles in aqueous systems.

The final number of credits offered may be subject to change.

Prerequisite

It is recommended that a student has passed at least two external standards at Level 2, preferably at a Merit or Excellence level because the Level 3 Chemistry externals are a harder version of Level 2 Chemistry externals. Alternatively, the student may discuss entry into the course with the HoD of Chemistry.

Scholarship

Scholarship involves answering questions which may range across all the externally assessed Standards of Level 3. Higher-level thinking skills are required for Scholarship. Potential candidates will be given resources and information to assist them to prepare for answering scholarship questions.
