Swimming Sports 2019

Mrs Beardmore —

On Friday 21 June, Columba College held their annual swimming sports at Moana Pool. The addition of both competitive and novelty events again this year, resulted in a large number of students and staff entering into the spirit of swimming!

A massive congratulations to all those keen students and staff who participated in our annual school swimming sports. The day began with an impressive diving display lead by NZ Rep. Sophie Derbyshire and our champion team of divers, and of course the much anticipated house chant off. These events set the scene for a morning of high energy competition and fun!

Some stellar results came out of the competitive pool, with Jordan Summers breaking the 50m breaststroke record, previously held by Caitlin Deans (2017). Overall winners were as follows;

Year 7 Champion - Aiva Pattinson-Trent

Year 8 Champion - Clara Peniamina

Junior Champion - Emma Morton

Intermediate Champion - Ashlea Law

Senior Champion - Jordan Summers

Congratulations to these athletes, and all those who competed and gained placings in the races throughout the morning.

In our novelty events, annual crowd favourite Jump Jam was as entertaining as ever, with Braemar coming out as winners after some close judging by staff.  The synchronised swimming was certainly enthusiastic this year, and clearly enjoyed by all students taking part!

To finish the morning, the eagerly awaited relay races brought everyone together in the spirit of competition, and united the school as student and staff teams swam their hearts out to achieve podium finishes. The bright yellow stars of Solway, cleaned up the relay and medley races across the board with some excellent team swimming. The Day Girls edged out the Boarders in their relay, while the Year 13 Students left the Staff and Prefects in their wake as they convincingly won their relay race.

A dominant display in the relays, and across most of the competitive and novelty events during the morning, meant Solway House came out as clear winners of our swimming sports for 2019. Congratulations!

House Winner - Solway
Spirit Stick Winner - Braemar

Thank you to all Staff, Sports Prefects, House Leaders and parent helpers for your time, energy, and assistance at the pool. Without you, we could not run such a successful event.

Special mention needs to go to Dr Macleod for the wonderful photos and captions attached to this article. Some fabulous images were captured. Thank you!
