Year 10 Ninjas unleashed!

Olivia Charles (Y10) —

On the last week of last term, the Year 10 cohort were given the opportunity to try their hand at Circus Skills and Ninja Training, which was taught by Malcam Trust tutors.

This involved spinning staffs and guided meditation. All of Year 10 loved the Ninja Training classes and were very excited when they were treated to a demonstration by Flow Arts team at Hive Dunedin.

The demonstration showed what skills could be gained with years of hard work and training and included the next step up in Ninja Training. The demonstration involved spinning staffs that were on fire and rope staffs. Rope staffs are flaming staffs that are swung by a rope attached to them. The rope staffs formed fireballs (which remove excess fuel) which were very impressive to witness. Students were given the chance to have a go with the lit staffs and the rope staffs, which was a great experience.

The Ninja Training helped students to gain skills in peer to peer teaching, communication, self-expression and spatial awareness. The training also empowered students, allowing them to creatively interact with members of their cohort and develop their self-confidence. The Year 10 cohort are very grateful for this unique opportunity and would like to thank Dunedin Flow Arts and Ms Lindsay for providing the workshops.
