Otago Southland Secondary Schools Ski and Snowboarding Champs

Ski Captain Laura Hamilton (Y12) —

Columba’s ski and snowboarding teams competed at the annual Otago Southland Secondary Schools Champs on Monday 6 August.

There was a slight change to the format this year with our girls having to adjust to different racing events compared to past years.

Columba entered three ski teams, which competed in the ‘Ski Individual Banked Slalom’ and the ‘Ski individual Slopestyle’ events. Representing Snowboarding for Columba was Siena Snow. She competed in the ‘Snowboard Individual Banked Slalom’ and ‘Snowboard Individual Slopestyle.’

There was a lot of tough competition this year compared to previous years, with a large number of Mount Aspiring College and Wakatipu school teams, who consisted of many experienced racers.

Considering this, Columba did very well with our top team consisting of, Liberty Vile, Laura Hamilton, Gemma O’Donnell, and Mary Gavin gaining an overall fifth place. A special mention goes to Liberty Vile who came fourth in the individual rankings, only just missing out on medal contention. We also congratulate Isabelle Keeling as she took home the bronze medal in the Ski Slopestyle event.

It was a very enjoyable day for the girls, with the weather staying very pleasant, perfect for racing.
