Hibiya High School Exchange

Administration —

We have thoroughly enjoyed the visit of 8 young ladies and their 2 teachers from Hibiya High School in Tokyo.

The group arrived last Friday afternoon and spent the weekend with their Host families. The girls spent time getting to know Dunedin (and its surrounds) as well as learning about the Kiwi lifestyle.

A quick shuffle of activities on Monday (due to the weather) gave the girls time with Ms Rose to learn more about Maori language and culture. The afternoon was spent at Toitu Museum. The girls moved into the Boarding House for the remainder of the week.

On Tuesday, they enjoyed time in the classroom with their Columba buddies before heading off to the Otago Museum. They spent the later part of the afternoon shopping for souvenirs in town.

Wednesday was an action packed day - they learnt how to make pavlova before heading off to Orokonui Ecosanctuary to  meet some NZ wildlife.  Once back at Columba the girls decorated the pavlova and thoroughly enjoyed tasting it!

Thursday was spent in classes with their Columba buddies. The Hibiya students gave a wonderful presentation about their school and lifestyle during a special assembly. The presentation allowed our girls to realise that the focus in Japanese schools is a combination of Gachi (making a serious effort in all things) and Unity (students participating in activities together).

Today we waved them off as they head back home to Tokyo.  We hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we enjoyed having them here at Columba.

A big Thank You to all the Columba families who so kindly volunteered to host the girls, to our Year 11 students who have been amazing buddies and Mrs Parks for giving the girls a taste of life at the Boarding House.
