As today’s announcement made clear, we are staying in Alert Level 4 lockdown until at least 11.59 Tuesday night.

We were going to have a guest speaker in Chapel today. Reverend Ed Masters, minister of First Church, was going to talk to us about Communion. We’re hoping to reschedule. Many of us won’t be familiar with this aspect of church life and I’m going to leave it to Rev. Masters to explain more about Communion. But, given our current context, it made me think.

Our teachers are committed to maintaining contact with their classes and ensuring that learning continues, albeit in a virtual space.

Hannah Coe is currently the speaking champion of the year 11 class. She spoke uninterrupted for 9 whole minutes in fantastic French for a game of impromptu speaking called Bavarde (Talkative).

Calm, reflective water, mild temperatures and a barbecue going in the background. You could have been forgiven for thinking we were on holiday, but no, it was the Columba rowing have-a-go day on the Otago Harbour!

On Wednesday students were asked to complete a writing task called 'Writing The Landscape' using prompts as suggested by Aotearoa New Zealand poet Dinah Hawken in the book 'The Exercise Book' Creative Writing Exercises from Victoria University's Institute of Modern Letters.

It has been another great year for Columba College at the Aurora Otago Science Fair. Columba projects claimed 13 prizes, including a Premier Award. Five projects were also Highly Commended.

Year 11 Physical Education students were out at Leap recently. They spent the afternoon leaping, flipping, doing handsprings and challenging each other to a game of dodgeball.

Mrs Vivienne Seaton and Penelope Hare visited two of our new neighbours last week – Mrs Natalie Ellis-Wilson and her husband, Mr H Robert Wilson, who have recently moved to Yvette Williams Retirement Village.

The Columba College Aerobics team competed in the NZCAF Regional competition held in Dunedin on the 14th and 15th of August taking away a number of medals and many qualifying for Nationals in September.

11 History has been examining the development of Women's Rights from suffrage in New Zealand 1893 through to the 1990s globally.

On Wednesday 11th August, the annual Hills Cluster Cross Country Champs was held at Bishopscourt. Columba College was extremely proud to have 33 athletes from Years 4 - 6 who had qualified for this event. Strong determination and competitive spirit resulted in some very impressive results from our young runners.
