Keeping our communities safe

Go Hororata —

Malvern Community Patrol has been working with communities to establish a network of security cameras. Now Hororata, Coalgate, and Glentunnel are working on raising funds to install cameras in these areas.

Across rural communities, there is a focus on crime prevention. One of the successful initiatives has been installing public security cameras in rural townships. Research shows areas with cameras tend to have less crime because criminals may be prevented if they know they will be apprehended if seen on camera.

Community-funded security cameras have been installed in a number of locations around the Malvern area and have already led to crimes being solved. The cameras recording with number plate reading software can only be accessed by the Police in the investigation of crime or crisis in the area. There is no public access to the recordings.

Go Hororata, the Coalgate Residents Committee, and Glentunnel Residents Committee are all working to fundraise to have cameras installed adding to the network in Malvern.

While each committee is working on cameras for their own area. They are collaborating to make sure there is a coordinated approach. Each camera setup costs between $3000 - $4500 to install.

The Hororata Community Trust sees this as an important project for all of our communities with wide-reaching benefits and has committed funds to help each committee achieve its goals.

Go Hororata is grateful to Dairy Holdings, ANZCO, Grasslands, Hororata Primary School, Hororata Motors, and HRL who have all donated towards cameras in the Hororata area.

Individuals in the community are invited to support this project by making a donation. This can be done by making contact with the committee in the area where you wish to support security cameras:
