Investigation work in Bishopdale and Papanui between Monday 25 March and early May 2024 - Message from the Christchurch City Council
Kia ora,
I’m getting in touch to let you know that we’re doing some investigation work on and around Harewood Road between Monday 25 March and early May 2024.
These investigations will confirm what is under the road to help plan the most efficient construction approach for several large infrastructure projects around Harewood Road, including:
- A Harewood Road watermain renewal
- New traffic lights at the Langdons Road and Greers Road intersection
- The Wheels to Wings Papanui ki Waiwhetū cycleway
Construction of these three projects is not programmed to begin until later in 2024.
Proceeding with the Wheels to Wings cycleway is dependent on securing funding from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). If we do not receive this funding contribution, the elected Council will need to decide on the next steps for the cycleway.
Why do we need to carry out investigations?
We’re taking a coordinated approach to this work to ensure that disruption to the area is minimised. It is common practice to conduct detailed investigations when preparing for the construction of large projects.
These investigations help us to:
- Confirm the location and condition of key services (i.e. water pipes) beneath the roads.
- Identify any potential clashes and risks to our construction approach.
- Create a construction approach that makes efficient use of time, resources and budget.
- Get a clearer picture of the expected costs of construction.
Will there be traffic impacts?
There will be traffic impacts while we work in the area. Please see page two of this letter for an overview of the location, timeline and traffic impacts of this investigation work.
Please visit ccc.govt.nz/bishopdale-works for more information about this work.

SEASON DATES
Junior rugby (Years 1 - 8) are due to start Saturday 11th May and run through to Saturday 31st August. Teenage rugby (Years 9 - 13) are due to start Saturday 4th May and run through to Saturday 24st August.
There are no games on Saturday 1st June (King’s Birthday weekend) or during school holidays (Saturday 13th & 20th July).
NAMES OF RUGBY GRADES HAVE CHANGED TO ALIGN TO SCHOOL YEARS
This season NZ Rugby has switched the naming of junior grades to align with school years. Under 6 becomes Year 1, Under 7 becomes Year 2 and so on. Eligibility is now based on school year as opposed to age as of 1 January. Lightweight players born in January-March may still be eligible to drop down a grade and play in their same team as last season. Refer to junior weight limits or reach out to us for more information.
Pre-school players are still eligible for our Year 1 rippa teams.
RIP RUGBY (Year 3 - 5)
This year we are aiming to run another team of girls and boys playing rip rugby. This is for kids in Years 3 – 5 at school that don’t want to or aren’t ready to tackle. This is a great option for kids that love playing touch over summer, but don’t want to tackle If you have a child in this age group wanting to play rip, select “rip rugby” as their playing grade. If you know of friends, siblings, whanau etc that would love this grade, or enjoy playing touch over summer, please let them know about our Year 3 – 5 rip grade.
Rippa rugby is still available for our Year 1 and 2 teams (previously Under 6 and Under 7). Pre-school players are still able to play in our Year 1 rippa teams.
TEENAGE RUGBY
We’re excited to expand our teenage rugby offering at Belfast RFC in 2023. This year we will field a Senior Girls team (Year 9 - 13) and a Senior Boys team (Years 11 - 13). This year Canterbury Rugby have introduced a new combined Junior Boys grade made up of Year 9 and 10 Boys. If numbers permit, we will also field a Junior Boys team.
We encourage all teens to register or get in touch with any questions. It is not too late even if you’ve already registered elsewhere but prefer to play for Belfast.
TEAM FORMATION
Teams will be formed following our registration day and weigh-ins to give teams and coaches time to get to know each other and start training before the season starts. Coaches or managers will contact you with details once the teams have been formed.
COACHES, MANAGERS, & SUPPORT
Our junior club is run entirely by volunteers. We have had great family support over the years and believe this is a key part of creating a club with a true community feel. All families will be asked to contribute if they can. You can help our junior club by:
· Coaching a team (full training provided)
· Managing a team – communications role, no rugby knowledge needed
· Running a sausage sizzle on a Saturday morning
· Joining the junior committee
· Taking photos and sharing success stories
· Help coordinate the club fundraiser (ie. Whittakers chocolate sale) initiatives
Thanks for your support and look forward to seeing you all this season.

Methven Scarecrow Trail: Saturday April 13 – Sunday April 28, 2024
The Methven Scarecrow Trail is a hugely popular and fun family event run in the April school holidays. It is suitable for all ages!
Every year, members of the Methven community build scarecrows to a particular theme and these scarecrows, usually around 30+ in number, are scattered around the town for families to find and try to identify the name of the character. This year's theme is Children's Movie - Animated Characters. Families or small groups purchase a Trail Map/Entry form from the iHub Information Centre and there are sponsored prizes for the most correct entries and for the most popular scarecrows.
Don't forget to like the Scarecrow Trail FB page if possible - this is where we post messages and the results - https://www.facebook.com/MethvenScarecrowTrail/
