Harewood Road, Gardiners Road, Breens Road Intersection

Stephen Harrison —

The Christchurch City Council are proposing two options for addressing and improving the safety of this intersection.

Proposed Options

Two options for improving the intersection have been developed:

Option 1: Left In/Left Out With Signalised Pedestrian Crossing

A left in/left out for vehicles, with buses still having the right turn into Gardiners Road, and a pedestrian crossing signal on Harewood Road. This option stops the current option of crossing  Harewood Road from Gardiners Road to Breens Road (and vice versa) and also turning right from Gardiners/Breens Roads onto Harewood Road.

Option 2: Traffic signals

Traffic signals with a pedestrian crossing on each leg of the crossing.

You can view full details of these proposals and provide feedback by clicking here.

Option 1 limits the opportunity to cross or turn right onto Harewood Road from Gardiners Road and Breens Avenue. In the past we have found any limitation to traffic flow along Gardiners Road has led to an increased traffic flow along an already congested  Cotswold Avenue.

I asked the Christchurch City Council City Services Team to provide us with a copy of the modelling that was completed and an indication as to how the two options would impact on Cotswold Avenue and Cotswold School. I have attached this information to this article.

I encourage all parents to read and respond to the options.
