Topic Learning in Year 5

Amazing Race
In week four, term two all the Year 5’s got together in Room 23 and competed in the Amazing RACE! This was the final piece of learning to celebrate our Kiwiana unit. The race involved 29 groups of three children who had to work together to solve a series of 10 clues (all about New Zealand), build puzzles and write about their experience while doing it. The clues were hidden around the whole school and once we figured out the answer we ran back to Rm 23 and showed the teachers the answer. If it was correct then we would get the next question but if we got it wrong then we had some more thinking on our hands. This was a great way to finish our Kiwiana unit.
Flight
Another topic that the seniors have been working on is FLIGHT or another name that we call it ‘Up, Up and Away’. Did you know - the four flight forces are thrust, drag, weight and lift?
We started off by making paper airplanes and did a class race for a warm up for the Paper Flying Competition of 2021. When the day finally arrived all the seniors were competing (Year 4s,5s and 6s). We set up in the hall ready for the race to begin. First up were the Year 4s and they did really well. Once there was a finalist for the Year 4’s it was the Year 5s turn and same again they did really well. After they got the finalist for the Year 5s it was time for the Year 6s to have their turn. They did amazing and then same again they picked their finalist. Now we were ready for the final throw off and they tried their paper planes against each other to see who would win the Paper Plane Throw Off of 2021. Congratulations to the Year 5s who threw their paper plane the furthest distance.
