Health Education

Stephen Harrison —

Health Education is an important area of the New Zealand Curriculum that all schools are required to teach. This includes topics such as: safety; nutrition; mental health and wellbeing; and respectful relationships.

In Term 3 we will be covering the Relationships and Sexuality Education aspect of the health curriculum.

The things your child will learn will be appropriate for their age or stage of development.

Below are the learning intentions for each year level:

Years 0 – 2

  • I have grown and learnt a lot since I was very young.
  • I will keep on growing and learning
  • I will have more responsibility as I get older
  • All parts of my body have a name and some of these parts are private
  • As I get older I can do more things for myself
  • I will know who to ask for help when I need it

Years 3 – 4

  • I will be able to describe myself and things I have in common with others
  • I can identify feelings and needs of myself and others
  • I know some ways of being a good friend
  • I understand how I react in different situations and can help moderate my emotions
  • I can name some people who love and care for me
  • I can name some helpful things I do at home
  • I understand that all the parts of my body have names

Year 5 – 6

  • I can identify the main things my body needs to grow
  • I know how to look after my body
  • I can identify feelings in myself and others
  • I know the names of all the parts of my body
  • I understand that my body will change as I get older
  • I can identify who to talk to if I am confused or need help about changes

Whilst the teaching of this area is compulsory, families do have to option to withdraw their children from sessions. This needs to be done, in writing, to Mr. Harrison.

If you have any concerns you can also contact the classroom teacher.
