On the last day of term, our school will take the opportunity to acknowledge two important events that celebrate inclusion, understanding and diversity: Neurodiversity Celebration Week (17–23 March) World Autism Awareness Day (2 April)

These events provide an important opportunity for our school community to build understanding, celebrate differences, and continue strengthening inclusive practices so that every student feels safe, valued and supported.

Neurodiversity recognises that all brains work differently. This includes individuals who are Autistic, as well as those with ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodivergences. Every person brings unique strengths, perspectives and ways of learning to our community.

We also recognise that some people prefer the term ‘Autistic person’ (identity-first language), while others prefer ‘person with autism’ (person-first language). At Craigburn, we respect and value both.

Our commitment to supporting neurodiversity and inclusive practices is a core part of student wellbeing, belonging and engagement in learning at Craigburn Primary School. We also recognise that neurodiversity exists across all cultures, backgrounds and communities, and we value the diverse experiences and identities within our school.

SRC Initiative – Hoodie Up Day

Our SRC Executive group has been exploring ways to help make Craigburn Primary School an even more inclusive place for everyone. One way they are doing this is by recognising Neurodiversity Celebration Week and World Autism Awareness Day, helping foster understanding of neurodiversity across our school.

Led by our SRC, we will be holding a Hoodie Up Casual Clothes Day on Friday 10 April, as part of celebrating inclusion at Craigburn.

“Hoodie Up for Autism” is an initiative that encourages schools and communities to wear hoodies to recognise and support Autistic people. For some Autistic individuals, hoodies can help reduce sensory input and support feelings of calm and regulation in busy environments.

By participating in Hoodie Up Day, students are helping to start conversations about inclusion, empathy and celebrating differences.

Students will be invited to:

• wear a hoodie or casual clothes

• bring along a gold coin donation

• learn more about neurodiversity and ways we can support one another at school

All funds raised will be donated to Amaze, an organisation that supports Autistic people and their families, working to create a more autism-inclusive Australia. These funds help provide vital support, advocacy and education to improve community understanding and inclusion.

Learning and Understanding Together

Across the school, classes may also engage in conversations and activities to help students understand:

• that everyone experiences the world differently

• the importance of kindness and acceptance

• ways we can support classmates who may experience sensory or social challenges

These conversations support our new school values of Community, Courage and Compassion, and reflect our commitment to creating predictable, inclusive and supportive learning environments for all students.

We are proud of our students for leading this important work and thank our families and community for supporting a culture of understanding, respect and inclusion at Craigburn. We look forward to celebrating these important events with you.
