Meet Kade West-Hill - an 18-year-old with a relentless spirit and the newly appointed Coordinator of the Whangārei Crohn’s and Colitis Support Group.

“I have always had the dream of helping others and giving back to the community. When the job for a coordinator in Whangārei was needed, I thought to myself ‘What better way to help the community than to do it for people going through similar health challenges.’

Hello, my name is Kade West-Hill, and I am the new Whangārei Crohn’s and Colitis Support Group Coordinator.

Allow me to introduce myself — I was born in Whangārei and still live here. I am 18 years old and just graduated from Pompallier Catholic College. From the time I was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, I developed a deep empathy for others grappling with similar issues and a desire to make a meaningful impact on their lives.

Numerous hospital stays shaped my perspective on life and inspired a shift in my career aspirations. While I initially dreamt of becoming an architect, witnessing the dedication of healthcare professionals attending to my needs altered my trajectory. Now, my ambition is to reciprocate the care I received by helping others navigate their health challenges and offering them the chance to lead a good-quality life.

I am thrilled to assume the position of Whangārei Crohn’s and Colitis Support Group Coordinator. Connecting with individuals facing similar health journeys and fostering a supportive community is something that resonates deeply with me. The impact that Crohn’s and Colitis New Zealand has had on my life has been substantial, and now, I am extending that to others in need.

Reflecting on my personal growth, I can't help but mention the experience at Camp Purple Live. Attending this amazing camp has reinforced the sense of community and reminded me and many others that we are not alone in our struggles. To those contemplating attending for the first time, I know it is nerve wracking, but trust me, you won't want to leave. I loved it! It is such an amazing camp to attend. I only attended once, but I hope in a few years, I will get to come back as a volunteer.

As I step into this new chapter as the Whangārei Crohn’s and Colitis Support Group Coordinator, I look forward to meeting and connecting with individuals in Whangārei and the wider Northland communities.”
