From lockdown challenge to family marathon: Donovan Neill's inspiring journey for CCNZ

Donovan Neil - Fundraiser —

In December 2021, when we initially explored Donovan Neill's motivation to fundraise for CCNZ, little did we anticipate that his dedication would transform into a remarkable family-wide running initiative.

Two years after Donovan undertook a personal running challenge during the lockdown, his entire family joined in, culminating in their memorable participation in this year's Auckland Marathon.

Donovan works in the sail-making industry and is passionate about hockey and race car driving.  He initially embraced running as a way to maintain fitness during the pandemic lockdown. "Our running journey began as a lockdown challenge. Now, two years later, we have 6 family members who have embraced the sport," Donovan shares.

The Neill family's participation in this year's Auckland Marathon showcased an impressive lineup:

  1. Christy and Melanie: Bravely taking on an 11km Traverse.

  1. Liz, Chester and Elliot: Fearlessly tackling their first Half Marathon, with Donovan providing crucial support by running alongside Liz.

As the family set their sights on this challenge, Donovan's motivation remained deeply rooted in his sister Elliot's ongoing battle with Crohn's disease, a condition that has significantly impacted their lives for the past five years.

Donovan explains, "Elliot's diagnosis changed everything for us. It's a journey we've undertaken as a family and running for CCNZ is our way of raising awareness and supporting others facing similar challenges."

The Auckland Marathon proved to be a resounding success for the Neill family, raising an impressive $2182.00 for CCNZ.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Neill Family for their unwavering fundraising commitments. Their inspiring journey from a lockdown challenge to a family marathon showcases the power of familial unity in making a positive impact on the IBD community.
