From Teenager to Triathlete: My Battle with Crohn's Disease and the Journey to Reclaiming Life

Keefe Stephens - Fundraiser —

Read Keefe's article detailing his Crohn's disease journey which began at the age of fifteen. His journey ultimately culminates in an inspiring triumph of hope and awareness, as he endeavours to raise funds for CCNZ.

My journey with Crohn's disease began when I was just fifteen. What initially felt like a stomach bug persisted, gradually transforming into fatigue before striking back with a vengeance. Red flags appeared when I found myself making up to 12-15 trips to the bathroom a day. The pain in my abdomen sometimes made it impossible to stand upright or enjoy a peaceful night's sleep. Each morning, the short journey from my bed to the bathroom became a painful venture, with sore joints and swollen feet. Finding the energy for a shower became a huge task on many nights. The most momentous change from my usual active self was that I couldn't bear the thought of engaging in any form of exercise. I had been an incredibly active person who exercised daily, but now that was a distant memory. I tried to maintain my social life as best as I could, but eventually, it became a battle I could not win. This vicious cycle persisted for years before my diagnosis, which was further delayed due to my stubborn insistence that going to the toilet ten or more times a day was normal. By this point, my life had undergone a complete 180-degree turn, transforming me from a young, fit, and sporty kid into a teenager crippled by Crohn’s.

Crohn's disease didn't just take a toll on my physical health; it also impacted my mental well-being over the last nine years since my diagnosis. I have been left feeling anxious and at times depressed. The daily ordeal of stepping out of the house was fraught with worries: What if it flares up? Where's the nearest toilet going to be? How long is the drive? These thoughts persist to this day, compounding the daily challenges of living with Crohn's disease.

I had no knowledge of the work being done by Crohn's and Colitis NZ, but I wish I had. When I was first diagnosed, it would have made a world of difference. They offer programs like Camp Purple, which provides essential support to young people with Crohn's and IBD, along with valuable information and assistance to anyone affected by Crohn's disease.

Since December 2022, I have been participating in a medical trial, and as of August 2023, I've decided to reclaim my life. I refuse to let Crohn's disease dictate my future. My goal is set for the Taupō full Ironman on March 2nd, 2024. I hope that by achieving this feat, I can raise awareness and spread the word about Crohn's and IBD, all while contributing to the cause. My mission is to generate funds for Crohn's and Colitis NZ so they can continue supporting those around New Zealand with Crohn’s disease.

Living with Crohn’s disease is not easy, no matter what stage of your journey you are at, and any help is good help!

CCNZ thanks Keefe for this incredible effort and support of CCNZ!
