Agricultural Day - 31st October

Gerhard Potgieter —

What you need to know ...

On Thursday, 31st October, we will be joining West Eyreton School for a combined Agricultural Day. It is time to get your entries in so we can start planning for the day. We will send a second Ag Day newsletter early in term 4 with the timetable and an explanation of the day's logistics.

How Ag Day Works?

There are two animal sections that you can enter an animal into.

Section A is for Agricultural Animals - lambs, calves and/or kids that your child has raised from birth; they are judged on the day and your child is asked questions about how they have cared for and raised their animal.

A comprehensive project must be submitted to the school office/classroom teacher by Monday, October 21st, to be marked before Ag Day.

Children participating in this category earn Agriculture Club badges and awards, which are presented at the end of the year prize-giving.

The sections to be included in the written project are:

  • Diary recording how the animal has been cared for over time

  • Growth data

  • Feeding

  • Housing

  • Breed information

  • Health

  • Other information and general presentation

Section B is for animals in the pet section of Ag Day. We are really keen to see more farm-based animals this year, but we do allow pets of all kinds. Animals include lambs, sheep, goats, kids, horses, ponies, pigs, calves, goldfish, poultry, birds, rabbits, cats, and dogs (must be Council registered, vaccinated, and able to cope in a stressful environment); pet rocks are welcome too :)

Animal Novelty Events

We have a range of animal novelty events on offer that you can enter.

Pets fancy dress competition – Theme - Halloween - Dress yourself and your animal up with a fun Halloween-themed costume.

Pet novelty transport - Theme - Halloween - Can you design an innovative way to transport your pet around the main arena? This is an excellent option for our smaller pets/animals.

Lamb/goat drinking demonstration - 250mls of milk and teat will be checked before the event.

Calf leading and handling

Dog leading, handling and obstacle course challenge - a fun obstacle course will be created to test your dog's obedience, confidence and teamwork.

Horse/Pony Riding Class

Crafts, Baking and Plant Entries

One of the absolute highlights of Agricultural Day is seeing the school hall filled with Enterprising crafts and baking. We strongly encourage all children to enter at least one of these. This year, we will be judging each section per year level, and your child will receive a certificate and possibly a ribbon if they place first, second, or third.

We have a range of crafts and baking on offer.

Hall Crafts

  • Floral bouquet - any combination of flowers &/or foliage in an egg cup or small teacup.

  • A creation or handcraft made from natural materials

  • A mini scene of your choice

  • Original artwork – a child’s original piece of artwork created at home

  • Best original Lego creation - no boxed sets

  • Painted pet rock - including a bio about your pet rock

  • Plastic bottle art

  • Pre-schoolers entry – create a pet or animal from any materials

Outside Crafts - displayed by the main arena

  • Outdoor planter - flowers, vegetables, or natives - the more creative, the better!

  • Scarecrow for the garden - Keep those pesky birds away!

Baking - please cover these with clear wrap or in a clear container.

  • A decorated pizza - child entry

  • A decorated cake – baked and decorated at home - child entry

Plant Entry

You child does have the option to enter a plant that they have grown and cared for. This will be judged so some written information about the plant, and how they have cared for it would be helpful to the judges.

You are now ready to enter...

This year, we are collating the entries slightly differently, so you will need to complete two forms. They are quick and easy, so it will not take long.

The links are below. Please ensure you complete the correct forms.

Enter one of these for each child if they are bringing an animal:

Section A is for Agricultural Animals - Agricultural/Project Animals Entry

Section B - Non-Agricultural Club Animals/Pets - Non-Agricultural Club Animals

It is strongly encouraged that all children enter at least one craft/baking entry.

Section C - Craft/Baking and Plant Entries - Crafts/Baking and Plant Entry Form
