Winter fun in the residences

Laurinda-Lee Grady —

Where has this term gone?! Definitely a drop in temperature but perfect reason to head for the hot pools in Hanmer Springs. Both houses journeyed to this little piece of paradise and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. Steaming heat from the hot pools and crystal ice-like droplets in the cold pool – we all danced on tippy-toes between the two. This was a first for Najma, Jordan, Jayden and LinhDa and all are keen to repeat the visit.

Red sky in morning, shepherds warning yet a stunning winters day emerged.

Week 8 we welcomed 9 mainstream students onto the campus for the Deaf Maori Immersion Hui. Henry stepped up and supported Steve and Kaaren (I see a future staff member in deaf education) J The participants were treated to a tiki-tour into the city centre, viewing the 185 Empty White Chairs memorial and then fun at Margaret Mahy Playground. The tour continued through the tunnel to Lyttelton and back to van Asch over the recently opened Summit Road.

This cultural hui included a boil up and hangi and new friendships were forged over the 5 days. The 3 wahine enjoyed hanging with the girls at Crawford House, our trampoline was put to good use and each night there were activities in the gym (thanks Henry for organising the games). The last night Roger ran a quiz - congratulations to John’s team who won. Huge thanks to all staff who contributed to making this a successful and memorable hui.
