Sarah Cameron —

GOAL: To give a clear presentation in New Zealand Sign Language that communicates a critical response to stimulus material.

Rahui Lee of Kelston Boys’ High School Deaf provision presented about ‘Discrimination against Deaf people’ in connection to the film, The Count of Solar by Tristiam Powell, Great Britain, 1991.

Rahui delivered a controlled and integrated viewpoint in NZSL weaving the social theme of discrimination against Deaf people from the earliest context leading to a stunning conclusion. Rahui’s critical analysis opened our eyes to the varying types of discrimination in the film and linked this up with external examples from our wider contemporary society.

Background:

‘The Count of Solar’ film is based on a partially true story of a Deaf Count who was almost denied his rights to his inheritance because he was Deaf and through his sister and a lawyer’s greed. A noble family conspired to remove the existence of a Deaf Count for their social and economic gain. A film that is worth watching!
