Parents meet and greet evening

Sarah Cameron —

Ormiston Primary staff organised a 'Parent Meet and Greet' evening providing pizza and other heart-warming food to give to parents and their families.

A special thanks to Selva Naidoo, Melipa Waites and Sam Purkis for giving up their Friday night to talk about expecting high standards from our Deaf and hard of hearing students. High expectations and a variety of strategies are given to our Deaf students for effective learning. Selva and Melipa explained about the strategies they used in their teaching.

All Deaf children can develop and grow just as we feed water to seedlings. Some grow into tall trees and others show a variety of beauty. It is the same for Deaf children. If we believe in them, they will reach their dreams if we allow them to.

I gave a presentation about the importance of high expectations and believing that Deaf and hard of hearing children can do anything, provided the support is given from school and home. I explained the KDEC management team is changing and that Deaf people do grow up and become successful as proved by those Deaf who are in the KDEC core school leaders' team.

I also showed the TKI Thumbs Up website resource for parents if they were interested to learn NZSL as another avenue to access sign language. This resource is useful for those who are very busy parents who may not be able to take time off to go to NZSL classes.

Families and their children turned up. I do not know who enjoyed it the most?
