Board of Trustees Triennial Elections - September 2022
Would you like to be more involved with the strategic developments at DPS? Our BOT elections will take place on 7th September, and we have three parent trustee positions coming up for election. Nominations must be received by Wednesday 3rd August.
Devonport Primary operates a system of Staggered (mid-term) Elections. This means that we hold triennial elections for three parent representatives and mid-term elections for the remaining two parent representatives. This system means that we are never in the position where we will lose the whole board at one time.
On this occasion, three elected board members (Robin McCoubrey, Mike Porteous and Margot Gatland), along with one co-opted trustee (Jonathan Cutler) will leave the board. None will stand for re-election as their children reach the end of their primary school days.
School board members play an active role in the strategic leadership of the school through informed governance. Every board member is supported by the NZ School Trustees Association’s (NZSTA) learning and development opportunities, and advisory and support centre. Learn more here https://www.nzsta.org.nz/
School boards are responsible for the school’s performance and ensuring that all legal requirements are met. Every state and state-integrated school in New Zealand has a board which is accountable for:
student achievement
setting the vision for the school
ensuring the school complies with legal and policy requirements
Every board member brings their own unique skills and experiences. It is helpful to have a diverse board. As a member of the board you need to work well in a team and have good communication skills. You may have financial skills, understanding of property management, experience in managing people, or knowledge and understanding of particular communities within the school.
If you would like to know more about the BOT have a word with one of the existing board members, or with me (beverleyb@devonport.school.nz).
