My teaching philosophy

Developing strong relationships, building a sense of belonging, and nurturing the very beginnings of academic learning are central to my teaching. I believe that when children feel safe, known, and valued, they are far more confident to explore, take risks, and see themselves as capable learners.
With a background in early childhood education, I place high importance on supporting children and their whānau through the transition to school, creating a classroom environment that feels welcoming, calm, and joyful. I am passionate about laying strong foundations for learning while fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love of school from the very start.

My special educational interests

  • Literacy in the junior years

  • Visual art

My experience and qualifications

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education, as well as a BA (Hons) in English Literature. I began teaching at Devonport Primary School in 2020, working with Year 0 students, and have also taught in Years 3 and 4.
While I have enjoyed teaching across different year levels, I am especially excited to return to my roots and be teaching new entrants again in 2026.

About me

I was born and raised in England, on the Thames Estuary in Essex. Before retraining as a teacher, I worked in marketing for 15 years across a range of industries, including finance, telecommunications, and chocolate (definitely my favourite!).
After marrying a Kiwi, I moved to New Zealand in 2012 with then our seven-month-old daughter, and we have been enjoying all that Devonport has to offer since 2014. I love living and working in the same community. My daughter is about to start at Takapuna Grammar and is a competitive dancer, so much of my spare time is spent waiting outside dance studios.
I am a passionate genealogist and have recently written a book about my family history. I also enjoy sketching, watercolour painting, and travelling whenever possible.
