Tikanga and te reo Māori (Māori customs and language)
We believe it is important for all our students to enfold Māori concepts into their understanding of the world.
At Devonport Primary School, our dedication to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is woven into the fabric of school life. We honour te ao Māori by integrating its principles and practices throughout our teaching and learning.
We recognise the significance of our place on our maunga, Takarunga (Mount Victoria), and work in partnership with the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority to care for and honour this taonga.
Our waiata kura, sung by all tamariki, reflects our connection to the whenua and celebrates our school’s unique place in the story of the Takarunga Hauraki region.
Kapa haka is part of every child’s journey at Devonport Primary. Our Senior Kapa Haka rōpū proudly performs at events across the North Shore, including the Onepoto Festival and our own Fair on the Hill.
We are committed to teaching te reo and tikanga Māori every day, enriching our learning environment and strengthening our bicultural identity within Aotearoa.
By the end of Year 6, our learners leave with a full kete—knowledge of te ao Māori, pride in their place in Aotearoa, and a strong sense of who they are in relation to the land, the people, and the cultures that shape us.
