Cycle Safe

Jill Pears —

On Tuesday the year 6’s got to do cycle safety.

Cycle safety is an activity that helps you learn about the importance of keeping safe on the road. You can also practise your biking skills and learn some ways to keep yourself safe on the road.

First we had a talk about our safety on the road and how we check our bike before we go onto the road. Next we also talked about some of the laws we have to follow when going the road. Afterwards we had to do an ABC check. You do this check by seeing how much air is in your tyre, if your brakes are working and if your chain is on.

We started playing some fun games to prepare us for the road. We played games like the shrinking box game and a turning game. Another activity we did was we had to ride around the court and at different points we had to look behind us or do a signal like stopping or turning.

In the afternoon we went out on the road. We walked our bikes down to the road then we crossed the road and got on our bikes. We rode down the road and did our first lesson. We used the skills we learnt to do a combination of getting on the road, turning and stopping.

The next day we went back onto the road in groups and did some biking lessons. We did a lesson about who turns first at a T intersection. We rode along the road and used our turning signal to turn and then rode back up and stopped. We repeated this until we got it perfect. We rode up to school and played a quick game before we finished for the morning.

That afternoon we went back out on the road and did another lesson. My group did a lesson about turning left. We had to do our start of looking behind using our turning signal and looking again. Then we went and rode down the road where we had to use the turning left signal and look to the right and then we turned. We repeated this lesson over and over until we got it spot on.

Overall I loved cycle safety and it made everyone more confident going on the road with bikes. A massive thanks to Vicky, Lisa and Monice. I am really grateful that we got to spend time learning safety skills on our bikes with such amazing people. Thank you!
