Music Notes

Fiona Rice —

There are various musical opportunities at school. Read on to find out if there is an opportunity for your child to begin or extend their music education.

Playing xylophone and ukulele are popular and enjoyable activities for many of our students. These groups are open to all year 5- 8 students.

Recorder tuition is also available and is recommended for students from year 4 upwards. If your child is interested in learning the recorder, please let us know: older children need not start on a descant (small) recorder; we have treble and tenor recorders, and also a bass which is looking for a new player this term. Learning the recorder is a great way to begin playing any instrument, but also transfers very easily to the clarinet and saxophone. This interesting article of why we learn to play the recorder at school may inspire our young musicians!

Ukulele and xylophone groups and recorder lessons will begin later this term in preparation for both the Strum, Strike and Blow Festival in August and the school anniversary in May.

We will shortly also be looking for expressions of interest in the Rock Band, which will perform at Bandquest in Term 3, and the Choir (years 5-8). The choir will perform at the school anniversary in addition to the Christchurch Schools  Festival. We encourage all our year 5-8 students to take advantage of this music opportunity at least once- it is an amazing opportunity that we are lucky to have in Christchurch,

Private music lessons which take place during the school day are also available. Our visiting tutors offer violin, viola, flute, piano

For those that are interested, we can also make enquiries about cello, brass (eg trumpet/trombone), guitar and drum lessons. Please contact Fiona Rice if you are interested in your child beginning private music lessons.

There are so many benefits to learning music. Not only is music a very enjoyable activity, but it can also help your child's development across many different areas of learning. This article lists 20 benefits to learning music, while this article outlines the benefits to the brain in more detail.
