Matariki in our school garden

Muriel Haines —

It is nearly the time of the year to celebrate Matariki. Our school garden is a place for all to share. A place to harvest the crops grown from the previous season, celebrate with the food we grew and also to prepare the soil for new plantings.

Kotuku students have been in the garden to do all these things.

Each Friday we share the food harvested from the garden and prepare it to eat for our weekly healthy lunch.

The students take note of what is in the garden, what we need to do and what needs harvesting and planting. It is also a time to tell stories about their experiences in the garden.

At this time of the year, we give the garden a chance to rest, be replenished with goodness, before a new season of planting.
