Lockdown Mask Making

Diamond Harbour School —

In lock down the year 6, 7 and 8s had to make a face mask out of materials we had at home.

Some of us went through our drawers to get some old clothes. The teachers gave us two patterns that we could use or we could search it up and find one that fitted our face better. To be able to wear it safely and for it to work it had to have 3 layers. The layers had to have different types of material. The inner layer had to be a type of absorbent material like cotton. The middle layer had to be like a nonwoven polypropylene. The outer layer had to be a non absorbent material like polyester or polyester blend. We also had to find something that would hold it to our face. We used stuff like hair ties, elastic, ribbon and other materials.

First we had to make a prototype and then our final because we needed to see what we liked and needed to change. It was then due by the end of the week. After we made them we had a masquerade on our morning hui. The benefit to making reusable masks is that it stops a lot of single use masks from going into the ocean. The impact this pandemic has is not very good considering the amount of people using single use masks. After this pandemic is over they think there's going to be more masks in the ocean then jellyfish. That's why we made our own and you should try doing it too. - by India and Olivia
