Challenge 2: Create a 2 Minute Video Clip
Video is a great way to tell a story, make a statement, or just make someone laugh.
It's so easy to make a video clip on your phone or iPad - it seems like everyone these days is uploading a video to YouTube or making a Vine (a 6 second video shared on an app).
Have you ever given it a go? This challenge is not about sharing a
video clip with the world (although you can if you wish to), it's about
planning, filming and editing a short video.
Step One: Decide on Your Topic
What is your 2 minute video going to be about? Here are some ideas if you are stuck:
- Vlog - short for video blog, is really like a diary entry. It
can be about anything, but usually involves your opinion or thoughts on
things that are happening. It could be your opinion on who's going to
win the rugby final, or how you are finding it to be you at the moment.
- An interview - is there someone who has had an experience you
would like to know more about, or has expertise on a topic that
interests you. Make sure if you are interviewing someone you plan your
questions and they encourage the person to talk, rather than answering
with a 'yes' or 'no'.
- Review - You can review anything you are interested in - the
last movie you watched, the nail polish your aunt gave you, or what you
think of the latest edition of Dirtbike magazine.
- Tutorial - What are you good at? It could be a video on how to draw a cartoon character, how to apply makeup or even showing your mum how to use the TV remote.
- Entertainment - May be you could even make a short movie with you as the star or using toys to act out a scene? Would you family or friends want to be actors in your movie?
Step Two: Select Your Video Editing App
For your video to be entertaining it's unlikely you will be able to record it in just one go. That's where a video editing app is useful. An editing app lets you cut out the footage you don't need, join video clips together and often add music or text to your video.
Three useful editing apps are:
iMovie (<$10, Apple)
- VideoEditor for free (free, Apple)
Videolicious (free, Apple /Android)
Step Three: Make your video
Start off with your script. A script is the words you are going to
say. Depending on the type of video you are creating you may need to
memorise them.
Once you have planned what is going to be said in front of the camera it's time to think about videoing. You may wish to run through it first without filming. But even when you are videoing don't worry if it's not quite right on your first attempt. You can always delete your video and start again, or use the video editing app.
Have fun!
