Cyber Safety in Schools ❗

Stuart Dillon-Roberts —

The Internet is a wonderful resource, unfortunately its access can also pose risks. Educating those who access your network about potential threats is key to keeping your users safe.

The Internet and associated online tools are constantly changing, providing schools with exciting new possibilities every year.  Unfortunately though, accessing the Internet is not without its risks.  Educating yourself, your staff and the students who access your network on potential threats is key to avoiding cyber-attacks and keeping your users safe.

How do we keep our users safe?

There are some great resources out there to help your school understand cyber-safety. CertNZ have a heap of material to read through, check it out at:  https://www.cert.govt.nz/.  Netsafe have developed the very comprehensive ‘The Netsafe Kit for Schools’ which would help you become cybersafe school. It includes a Digital Citizenship Policy, a Staff Responsible Use Agreement and a Student Responsible Use Agreement.

The Ministry of Education have also put out a very practical guide called ‘Digital Technology – Safe and responsible use in schools’ which covers everything from; preventing incidents,  the responsibility of schools and their authority to act and the associated legislation.

It is important that your school has an easy to read acceptable use policy that outlines the expected behaviour of staff, students and visitors using your school’s technology and Internet services, and that they sign this policy before being given access. An example of a simple Acceptable Use policy can be found in the attachment below or if you would like a more personalised agreement then get in touch.
