Closure of Takitimu Home in Invercargill

For some time we have been aware that Takitimu home in Southland has been facing increasing challenges within a rapidly changing health of older people’s sector.

The Takitimu Board have been working through t a variety of options to reposition the business or sell as a going concern. They have reluctantly come to the decision to close. As is the way with many of our Diocesan based institutions, Takitimu is operated as a standalone Charitable Trust that reports to the Diocese of Dunedin Synod, and our Diocesan Council (the standing committee of Synod) have been kept informed of developments.

Our main concern at this time is for the residents, staff and board members of Takitimu, and our prayers are with them during this difficult and challenging time. As at close of play on Friday 22nd March, 16 out of 18 residents have confirmed places at other facilities and 11 of those 16 have moving dates with the first one leaving on Monday the 25th of March. I ask all of you to pray for these residents and staff/board members and look to practical ways we can support them in all that needs to happen ahead.

We have a number of aged care facilities and organisations within the Diocese of Dunedin who provide ongoing excellent services in their communities, and who continue to collaborate with each other with the support of our Social Transformation Committee. Please uphold them in your prayers as they continue to work alongside older people, their whanau and friends.
