Preservation of Documents Notice

Andrew Metcalfe —

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the care of Faith Based Institutions is beginning its work. We have received a Notice around the Preservation of Documents.

The notice is attached below and stipulates that any relevant information that may be held by faith based institutions must be preserved so that it is available for consideration of the Royal Commission. We are still unsure to what extent the Diocese of Dunedin will be involved in aspects of this inquiry: our Social Transformation Committee has had this on its radar and has supplied contact information to national bodies about organisations that there may be requests of information from. These include our existing social service related organisations, as well as past ones such as:

  • St Mary's Orphanage in Dunedin (closed in 1933);
  • Anglican Memorial Home (Dunedin), closed 1972;
  • Children’s rest home / Dunkley Temporary Homes (Dunedin), ceased operations in 1970.

Please note that nationally the Anglican church is reviewing principles (core truths/ideas), policies (rules derived from principles), procedures (course of action for policies) that will be more widely available soon and will also relate to the work the Royal Commission is undertaking.

Related to this as well, there is work taking place to establish a national Professional Standards Office that will be the first port of call for anyone who has a complaint or a serious matter relating to an diocesan institution, parish or person. This will enable national consistency around how sensitive complaints are dealt with, and will also involve a review of the Professional Standards Canon (Title D)
