Rev'd Katie Marcar's ordination took place with a diverse congregation of people (following Alert Level 2 requirements) which mirrored Katie's work and Church involvement since coming to New Zealand from the United States via Edinburgh and Durham (Scotland-England) for her role as a Teaching Fellow in Biblical Languages (introductory papers on biblical Greek and biblical Hebrew, as well as advanced papers on the Hebrew scriptures and Greek New Testament). Her ordination service reflected the diversity of her work world, with elements that reflected the three-tikanga nature of the Anglican Church in New Zealand and Polynesia.

The Ordination of Dr Katie Marcar to the Diaconate - 26th November 2021 St Pauls Cathedral Dunedin

Katie has been a Lay Minister based in Dunedin North Parish, actively engaged in church ministry, preaching, and youth work. Bishop Steve reminded the congregation that this was a slightly different ordination, in that although she works in academia, she has been licensed to him as she begins a period of maternity leave. There will be opportunities in the future for her to continue to experience the diverse nature of ministry in the South, with our urban and rural mixture of ministries.

Reverend Lisa Barlow was ordained at St John's Roslyn, where she and her husband (Andrew) and family are worshiping, and where Lisa has been serving as a curate. She is also working part time as a chaplain at Otago Community Hospice. There was a real sense of family-whanau with Lisa's family and her church family celebrating this new era in her life and ministry. A group of younger people led the congregation in prayer and reflection. Bishop Steve spoke on the 23rd Psalm around the shepherd guiding us - which sometimes takes us into the valley of darkness, but always leads us home into God's presence.
