Ministry School 2025 at En Hakkore: Christ is our mooring-post

Damon Plimmer —

From May 8–10, clergy and ordinands from across the south gathered at En Hakkore Retreat Centre for Ministry School 2025—a time of reflection, learning, and connection.

Inspired by the image from Ngā Hākari Tapu of Jesus as the mooring post to which we all tie our waka, this year’s theme centred on our unity in Christ and the shared journey of ministry.

The three days opened with worship and a study led by our bishop. Bishop Anne took the opportunity to get us thinking about the “why” which gives purpose to our lives as Christians, and the “who” we are as a result of this. Using as her text 2 Corinthians 5, she reminded us of the good news of Christ’s saving love and of our call to be messengers of reconciliation.

This year’s speaker was Dr. Chris Jansen from Leadership Lab. A person of faith and practical wisdom, Chris invited us to consider our leadership styles and introduced us to ways of leading to help our ministry situations thrive– seeking out shared values, developing skills and strengths, building mechanisms for dialogue, fostering independence and trust.

Through interactive sessions, storytelling, and practical tools, Chris helped us to understand how we can better navigate the challenges of ministry leadership. His insights into group dynamics, communication, and leading effectively were perceptive and applicable.

Ministry School 2025 was more than just a training—it was a space to grow in connection, to deepen our love for one another, and to recommit ourselves to the call of Christ. As each of us return to our communities, we do so more united, more equipped, and more anchored in the One who holds us all together.
