Youth opportunity at Dunedin Synods

John Graveston —

The Dunedin Diocese recognises the importance of young people in the leadership of the church. One of these ways is giving young people the opportunity to participate in the Diocesan Synods. If you have any young people who might be interested keep reading.

Since the Council of Jerusalem (Acts) the church has gathered in Synod to determine the best way forward in the Holy Spirit and the wisdom of the gathered congregation. This is your opportunity to bring to the voice of young people to Synod and to participate in shaping the future of the church.

There are three opportunities for young people to participate in Synod.

1. Diocesan Youth Representative
2. Parish Synod Representative
3. Synod Youth Steward

Diocesan Youth Representative

Every two years the position of Diocesan Youth Representative is elected by the Diocesan Council to represent young people in the Diocese.

As a Diocesan Youth Representative, you get both speaking and voting rights.

There are two Diocesan Youth Representative positions available for people aged between 16 - 30 years old for this year.

If you are interested in representing Otago & Southland Young People at Synod for the next two years, then we want to hear from you. Get someone to nominate you (i.e. Youth Minister, Young Adults Leader, or Vicar) and you could be heading to Synod.

Nominations to be emailed to youth@calledsouth.org.nz by 26 of February 2020 (Ash Wednesday) with a blurb of why you want to be a youth rep and what you would bring to the role. Nominations will be taken to the March Diocesan Council meeting for verification.

Parish Synod Representative

Every two years your parish elect people to represent them at a Diocesan level by attending the Dunedin Diocesan Synod. This election is had at your church's Annual General Meeting.  As a parish Synod Representative, you get both speaking and voting rights. Being a parish synod representative also gives you a place on your church's vestry. This gives you another opportunity to have a say in the running of your church.

If you wish to be nominated talk to your Vicar or Wardens.

Synod Youth Steward

This year the Diocese of Dunedin in trialing a new opportunity for young people who are interested in Synod and wish to see what it takes for them to run smoothly. This is an opportunity for two Youth Stewards at the upcoming Special Synod covering Selwyn College. You will be assisting with tasks such as IT, organising the venue, directing Synod members and any other tasks that are needed.

If you are interested in this opportunity contact John Graveston, youth@calledsouth.org.nz.
