Synod 2020 Selwyn College – Te Maru Pūmanawa Plenary and Business Session

Andrew Metcalfe —

Attending the continuation of Synod on 14 November? Remember to bring a Prayer Book with you. Also, we now have a slightly amended order of proceedings.

Link to Synod 2020 page for Order of Proceedings

  • The Synod book Part 1 gives information about our venue (St Matthews Dunedin). Please enter the church via the Hope Street door (next to the Hope Centre)
  • Bring yourself (stay home if you are unwell), a ballpoint pen and your own lunch.
  • Bring your Prayer Book with you as we will use this during the day.
  • We have timed the day so that it is possible to come to Dunedin and return home in one day (we are aiming to finish at 3 pm, but this will depend on how the debate goes)
  • We will print out copies of the Order of Proceedings (which also contains the motions we will be considering) and these will be available on the day.
  • We are not able to livestream proceedings, but will send out a media release after Synod on the outcome.

Plenary Session

You will have seen that the first part of our session on 14 November has space to reconnect with the conversation so far around Selwyn College – Te Maru Pūmanawa before motions are considered by Synod.  Approximately 20% of Synod reps are new from 2020 elections, and it may be a challenge to catch up with the journey so far.

The Plenary session gives an opportunity to discuss in a more informal setting what has taken place and to ask questions. This will help decision making when we move back into the formal Synod process.

We suggest the following:

  • If you are a new Synod rep, ask your predecessor to give you a briefing of what took place at previous Synods and the Hui held in November 2019
  • Read The Selwyn College – Te Maru Pumanawa Consultation Panel Report to the Diocese of Dunedin Synod. Have a look especially at Appendix 3: Other Questions and Comments (pg. 49-52) which may have already asked & answered a question you have
  • If you have any questions you would like addressed during the plenary session, we will take these from the floor after speaking to previously submitted queries.

Archbishop Sir David Moxon (Chair of the Consultation panel) will be present, as well as Anne Stevens (QC), Chair of the Selwyn Board and Luke McClelland, Warden of Selwyn College – Te Maru Pūmanawa.

We have attached a paper that Archbishop David Moxon will be referring to today (Training for Outward Facing Ministry)
