Remembering the Little Enemy

Andrew Metcalfe —

Some of you may have seen a series of videos from Toitū Otago Settler's Museum in Dunedin that began production during Lockdown. This episode reflects back to Presbyterian vs Anglican dynamics in the south...

There was a real animosity between Free Church (Scottish) settlers and the "Little Enemy" (English origin, mainly Anglican and non-conformist).

This video provides a fascinating recollection of the partisan (sectarian) lines drawn in our part of Aotearoa near the start of European settlement, and it reminds us of how hard it can be to build communities that don't drift towards patch protection.

"Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who those who sin against us..."
