Food For Life: Parata Home's New Kitchen
On Tuesday February 23 a refurbished kitchen was blessed at Parata Anglican Trust residence in Gore.
Bishop Steven Benford joined the Parata community to give thanks and bless all those associated with the Kitchen Upgrade project.
Parata was very blessed to have Bishop Steven spend the day with us, leading the Communion Service with Vicar Gary and Lois Shallard our Chaplain; joining Residents for the midday meal, completing a pastoral visit and Blessing the Kitchen, those who built, work in it and enjoy the food prepared from it.
A lead funding grant was provided from the Diocesan Council via The Social Justice Committee (SJC). It was great to have the Southland Diocesan Council member and SJC representative Dot Muir join us to become familiar with Parata and see first-hand the work that has been made possible with this funding support.
Upgrading the Kitchen was a challenge through the COVID-19 Alert Levels, but the efforts of all involved have been rewarded with a beautiful, future-proofed work space, giving increased capacity and functionality.
The demand for Parata Community Meals has increased in 14 months from around 100 to 200 delivered meals a week, along with a further 50 for the Community Day Activity programme: the greater capacity has ensured nobody in need is turned away.
Parata is very much exemplifying the parable of ‘The Loaves and the Fishes’ in feeding the multitudes. As Bishop Steve said in his address, food and eating were important to Jesus and it's always been a part of Christian mission. Food prepared in this kitchen lovingly provides for residents, staff and the local community.
Thank you to all those who contribute to the Community Meals service, as well as for the support received from the Holy Trinity Parish volunteers who assist with deliveries.
