Tikanga Toru Youth Exchange

John Graveston —

Aleshia Lawson, Jacob Hurd-Vial, Dominic Barlow, Ewen Clarke-Wallace and John Graveston all from the Diocese of Dunedin attending the Tikanga Toru Youth Exchange.

The Tikanga Toru Youth Exchange (TYE) was held between the 6th-12th of December in Tauranga by the Tikanga Toru Youth Commission.

TYE followed the story of Tārore of Waharoa who is a Taonga for Christianity in Aotearoa. As a group, we visited the gravesite of Tārore at the Matamata Pā site near the village of Waharoa. Here we heard about the story of Tārore and the way that the Gospel of Luke spread throughout Aotearoa. We also visited the location of Tārore death by the Wairere Falls and where she went to school in Tauranga taught by Charlotte and Alfred Brown. If you want to learn more about her story click here.

TYE is an opportunity for young people from the three different Tikanga of the Anglican Church to come together in friendship, fun, and learning. Each day started and ended in karakia lead by a different Tikanga. We also had a combined Tikanga church service weaving all three Tikanga ways of worship together.

There was also plenty of time for fun. Including a quiz night, a sports day, playing Uno, and spending time with new friends.
