The Reverend Mary Rosetta Greet
Many of you will be sad to hear of the death of Rev'd Mary Greet last Friday.
A funeral service will be held for Mary at St Michael's, Elliot Street, Dunedin, Thursday 23 November at 10 am. All welcome - please wear bright colours. Messages may be left on Mary's page at www.tributes.co.nz where the service can also be viewed via livestream. (For Clergy attending in the congregation - robing is not required).
Mary was a much loved Priest and member of the Otago Peninsula Parish, having been ordained a Deacon and then Priest in 2003 by Bishop Penny Jamieson. Mary was appointed as a Local Priest to the church of St Nicholas in Waverley by Bishop George in 2005. For the past 18 years her ministry has continued in the Parish and beyond, including being actively involved as a Synod and General Synod representative, and a Parish nominator. Mary remained a Local Priest with a particular connection to to St Nicholas Church in Waverley, (until its closure in 2022), and with the Otago Peninsula Parish.
Mary was born in 1936 in Dorchester, England, and increasingly became drawn towards the Anglican Church, eventually training to be a Secondary Modern teacher (majoring in Geography and Biology, plus specialising for work with children in special needs) at St Mary's Church of England Training College in Cheltenham. At a teaching post with the Airforce in Aden she met her husband of 25 years, David, eventually moving to New Zealand with him where all of their children were born.
After many years living in Whangarei and Wellington, a shift to Dunedin saw Mary taking up teaching posts at Queens and Bayfield High Schools. Around the time of the birth of her youngest daughter, Mary began to take a more active role in the church, and her involvement in an Education for Ministry (E.F.M.) group, in her words "changed my life", challenging her to find out more about the Bible and the Church via further studies.
Mary was also a keen actor, and was involved in Dunedin's Globe Theatre for many years.
Please hold Mary and her family (Cathy, Nick and Becca and grandchildren) in your prayers at this time of loss. May Mary rest in peace and rise in glory.
