A new beginning - Clergy appointment
Bishop Steven is delighted to announce the appointment of Reverend Richard Johnson as the Dean of Rural Ministry.
Richard writes:
"Following my stepping back as Vicar of Gladstone, Invercargill, a new part-time non-stipendiary ministry has evolved, as is God’s way! The initial objective is to renew an Anglican ministry presence in rural areas of Northern Southland where local churches have closed, but farming families have remained. The plan for Northern Southland is to build relationships, provide a Priestly and pastoral presence, and see where it goes.
Before my family moved to Invercargill in 2001, I had served mostly farming communities in Zimbabwe as a non-stipendiary Priest. Having my own business consultancy gave me a degree of freedom to offer such ministry. In addition, some of my clients were involved in agriculture as suppliers of equipment, tractors, land preparation and harvesting machinery and agricultural and financial services, and my wife’s Sue’s family were all farmers. One can say I can speak the language!"
Bishop Steven adds
“ Relationship is at the heart of our faith and building strong relationships enables so much to flourish. I am delighted to license Richard to this role and to bless him as he continues to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to many at the heart of our country, who increasingly find themselves on the edges of community.”
Richard's Licence will be presented to him at the Southland Archdeaconry Service of Recollection, Renewal and Commitment, this Saturday at 7pm, Holy Trinity Invercargill.
