Matariki Family Service: Remember, Give Thanks, Look Ahead

Rev. John Graveston —

As the stars of Matariki rise in our winter sky, we gather as a faith community to mark this special season with a Matariki Family Service, a time to reflect, celebrate, and look forward in hope.

All are welcome, especially children and families!

Matariki is a time to remember those we love who have died, to give thanks for the beauty and abundance of creation, and to look ahead with courage and joy. This family-friendly service will gently explore all three themes, remembrance, creation care, and hope for the future, through prayer, music, and hands-on activities.

Children will be invited to visit three creative prayer stations:

  • Remembrance – honouring loved ones through light and memory

  • Creation – giving thanks and planting seeds of care

  • Future – dreaming with God about the year ahead

There will be simple, meaningful liturgy, child-friendly prayers, and uplifting songs that the whole family can enjoy. Whether you’re deeply familiar with Matariki or simply curious to learn more, this is a beautiful opportunity to connect faith and season in a way that speaks to all ages.

Come and join us as we remember with love, give thanks with joy, and dream with hope.

Date: 15th June 2025
Time: 3.30 pm
Location: St. Michael's, 44 Elliot St, Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin.

This service is jointly hosted by The Otago Peninsula Anglican and The Diocese of Dunedin.

Nau mai, haere mai – all are welcome.
