End of Life Referendum

Diocesan Office —

This year at the general election we will be given the opportunity to vote on cannabis legislation and control as well as the End of Life Choice. We have updated this page with more resources to help you make your decision.

Although the Synod of the Diocese of Dunedin does not have an official stance on the End of Life Bill, a number of individuals from the Diocese made submissions at the select committee process opposing this, including Bishop Steven Benford. Other Dioceses such as Waikato-Taranaki have made a strong stance on this and are encouraging Anglicans to vote "no".

There are a number of resources that will assist you in your deliberation and prayer around this matter:

The New Zealand Government Referendum Website has information on the End of Life Bill as well as the proposed Cannabis legislation.

2020 End of Life Act - Attached is a document endorsed by most of the main faith leaders in NZ dealing with their concerns about the End of Life Act as in the referendum. It is an official Anglican attitude to the extent that it is endorsed by all active Diocesan and Hui Amorangi Bishops in Aotearoa NZ.

Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki have resourced they have produced (attached below)

Diocese of Nelson have a blog with a thoughtful and helpful article on this (also posted on Anglican Tanonga)

The Interchurch Bioethics Committee have resources that you can look at to help your understanding around this.

An insightful article in the NZ medical journal, presenting a physicians/legal perspective. It attempts to be neutral, simply presenting a number of different considerations and summarising the viewpoints held by the two sides, but there is certainly plenty in there that speaks to concerns that many hold about the legislation.

NZ Hospice - why it went to court over the proposed law (an article in Stuff)
