Year 10 students learn road safety skills at BStreetSmart excursion

Ms Glansbeek, Head Teacher PDHPE —

On the 23 August, 120 of our Year 10 students and four PDHPE teachers made their way to Qudos Bank Arena to the BStreetSmart event - Australia's largest educational road safety event, aiming to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe road use behaviour.

This is where our students, along with an abundance of other school students from NSW watched interactive displays of live crashes, role playing scenarios, and crash test dummy simulations. Such were based on young people using their phones whilst driving, not wearing seatbelts, driving over the speed limit, or participating in other distracting behaviours, such as drink/ drug driving.

Students were also able to hear from numerous survivors, ambulance workers, police, trauma doctors, and nurses tell stories about their experiences with road fatalities. Lastly, students were able to explore Qudos Bank Arena, taking part in a magnitude of interactive displays. Some of these displays were held by NSW Law Enforcement, Care Flight, highly trained specialists from ICU at Westmead Hospital, and a sporting organization named Wheelchair sports NSW/ ACT.

Overall, our students had a beneficial, educational, and life changing day, learning the overall message - safe behaviour as riders, passengers, and drivers on our roads, now and for the purposes of the future.
