What our Support Unit students are learning and an update on our sensory garden

Ms Regan, Head Teacher Support —

It’s been a wonderful return to school for the Support Unit; students are learning about a variety of exciting topics such as Aboriginal Seasons and Safety in the Community while also doing incredible work in our Wellbeing sensory garden.

The Support Unit consists of three classes - one IM (Intellectually Mild) class and two IO/Au (Moderate Intellectual Disability/Autism) classes.

This year, students have been accessing the Life Skills curriculum across all KLA’s. In HSIE, students are investigating the topic of Aboriginal Seasons where they are learning to sequence days, months and seasons with the standard calendar in comparison to the Aboriginal seasonal calendar. This knowledge is also being transferred to the subjects of Science and Environment.

They are also working hard in our Wellbeing sensory garden while applying what they have learnt in class in relation to seasonal plantings. We have developed a Garden Work crew who have targeted jobs to complete in the garden. Some students have the job of removing non native saplings that have grown over the break and are working together to problem solve without the intervention of the teacher. So far they have successfully removed all of the Camphor Laurel saplings that are considered to be a noxious weed.

The Support Unit students are actively engaged in Community Access which is a key component in the Support Unit curriculum. This program is about ensuring students are developing skills to establish meaningful engagement with local communities and have the opportunity to take part in interactions with other people in the community. We have been to numerous places in our local area including Marrickville Oval, Dulwich Hill Community Garden and Arlington Light Rail. We have plans to visit the Police and Fire Station to coincide with our Topic of Safety in the Community.
