On November 25, our students were invited to be part of the special preview for schools of the Sydney Modern Project.

This was a great honour for the students as they were in fact among the first public viewers of this new, expansive, and amazing gallery before it officially opened to the public the following week.

The day began with the students visiting the AGNSW (known as the south building) where the students studied works from the Renaissance all the way through to contemporary art and Asian art. The viewing experience was dramatically different as the students then visited Sydney Modern Project building, next door.

An indigenous smoke ceremony welcomed the Year 12’s as they entered the building, paying respect to the original owners of the land. On entering the building, wide open spaces and light filled rooms provided a counterpoint to the old gallery. The students not only viewed diverse and engaging artworks, but also were immersed in the experience that each of the gallery spaces presented. This culminated in the surreal experience of the darkness of the tank room where Argentinian sculptor, Adrian Villar Rojas has installed monstrous sci-fi creatures.

All the students had a wonderful day with many keen to return over the vacation to continue their engagement with the artworks.
