Visual Arts in Focus: Art Month, Year 7 Archibald Prize Excursion, and What’s Next

Mr Wootten, Head Teacher Visual Arts —

The Visual Arts faculty have been engaged in several activities focused on extending the learning experience of our students.

Artmonth begins in Week 5 with 17 artist workshops occurring over three weeks and culminating in the Artmonth 25 exhibition. Please note that additional information on the exhibition will be provided towards the end of the term.

The Visual Arts & Design teachers as well as executive staff conducted 2 days of interviews with Year 6 students applying for the Artstream 2026. While a daunting experience for many of the students to participate in their first interview and presentation of their portfolio, the staff were immensely impressed with the high calibre of the students in expressing their thoughts, ideas and passion as young creatives. While most of the student applicants live within a reasonable proximity to the school, several were applying from other areas of Sydney.

Year 7 Artstream students attended the Archibald Prize exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW on May 22 as an extension learning activity. The student’s strong interest in art was evident in their enthusiastic engagement at looking at and discussing the artworks.

Of particular interest is the winner of the 2025 Packing Room Prize, “No mountain high enough” by Abdul Abdullah the subject of which is his friend Jason Phu. Both of these artists have been to our school and provided wonderful and engaging learning experiences.

During Term 2, Year 7 students will be painting portraits of people in our school community. All the artworks will be exhibited in the Dully Archies Portrait exhibition, the exhibition to be launched in an evening event later this term.

The planning and organisation of the Year 8 Artstream excursion to Canberra is near completion, with students visiting Canberra on November 6 and 7. They will participate in tours and workshops at the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, The National Museum of Australia, Parliament House and tour of the embassy area of the national capital.

We are immensely excited to see the completed construction of the new art rooms that are greatly required to ensure all art making sessions are in a purpose-built facility. Once the rooms become officially operational, we will launch there first activity as the centre for our Artmonth workshops.
