Making Waves Program: Build a boat, then sail it

Mr Leggett, Careers Advisor —

Year 10 student Oliver is currently participating in a great program for students that involves designing, building and maintaining sailing boats.

The Wright of Passage program is run by the Making Waves foundation, and focuses on re-engaging young people with their learning, through the development of both personal qualities and workplace skills. The program involves students taking one day out of the week for one or more terms to design, build and sail boats in a positive team environment.

With the school’s support, Oliver H-S participated in Wright of Passage since early in Term 2, and it has fired his passion for sailing, design and construction. Oliver attends one Wednesday per week, where his group meets to build, maintain and sail their boats. The program has taught Oliver to manage his time and responsibilities, work with new people and embrace challenges.
