This year, between 17th-28th May, our Dulwich, (DHSVAD) junior classes (years 7 to 10) competed against other high schools around Australia, New Zealand and Singapore in the Big Science Competition.

The competition is run annually by Australian Science Innovations to promote Science and STEM skills with prizes for participating that included a Segway Scooter, an iPad and a Nintendo Switch amongst other prizes.

Students answered questions in a 50-minute test that included stage appropriate Science knowledge, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Questions were on a wide range of contemporary topics such as:

  • Biotechnology
  • Space exploration
  • Renewable energy
  • Agriculture.

We had a spectacular participation rate of 78% with 35% of participants also answering the bonus questions. What an amazing effort Dulwich!

Friendly competition can bring out the best in students as they are motivated to achieve their best.

All students will soon receive participation certificates with the highest performing students receiving awards for Credit (top 30%), Distinction (top 15%) and High Distinction (top 5%) ...and of course, there's the chance to win prizes.

Students will receive a full report on their strengths and weaknesses that they can reflect on and use to improve their learning in Science.

Our Science Faculty will also receive a report, which will help us plan better lessons and promote STEM skills.

Overall we received 6 High Distinctions, 41 Distinctions and 95 Credits in the Big Science Comp!

Congratulations to the following students who received a High Distinction:

Year 8
Sidney K and Zoe M

Year 9
Dutch Y and Milla N

Year 10
