Young Surveyors Measure up a Great Career Path

Mr Leggett, Carees Advisor —

Following our successful Mini Careers Expo, five students from Year 10 were invited to attend Surveying Unleashed, a full day workshop hosted by Surveying Careers at Walsh Bay.

They worked together to complete a range of surveying activities involving Laser Scanning, Satellite Positioning and the Cadastral device (See picture). Students also heard from a wide range of young and senior surveyors about the many opportunities and diverse pathways that are open to those who enter this essential but often overlooked profession.

Becoming a surveyor typically involves a four year degree (UNSW and Uni of Newcastle have the best-known programs), however there are also Cert IV and Diploma courses with no ATAR requirements that can be used to get employed and begin building the skills that surveyors use every day.

As Career Adviser, I was also able to make some valuable connections, which may lead to further work experience opportunities for students, therefore, anyone interested in exploring surveying should get in contact.

After meeting a lot of surveyors (and hearing about how much they earn!) I would encourage  students interested in mathematics, geography or planning to give it a think.
