Support Special Education
Rainbow chalk, task boxes and tassle curtains
The return to school has seen the arrival of 7 new students in the Support Unit.
The transition has been an exciting time with the students focused on building relationships, communicating and participating in a range of tasks and activities to introduce them to high school.
In Science we are studying the topic of Matter and learning about the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
In the Nolan class, the students conducted a scientific experiment of turning a liquid into a solid. The students made coloured water with paint in the shades of the rainbow. We added Plaster of Paris to the water to make a thickened liquid. We then poured this into rolls in coloured segments. The end product was a solid piece of rainbow chalk. The students loved this experiment and we are planning to turn this into a Rainbow Chalk micro-business.
The students are familarising themselves with different task boxes in the classroom.
We are using coloured dice in Maths for numeracy tasks as well as sorting activities. The students are learning about colour theory and mixing primary and secondary colours. Stacking and sorting are also popular tasks for when our students require a brain break for sensory regulation. We have also hung rainbow coloured tassle curtains that blow in the breeze, creating sensory sounds and patterns for the students to have their visual sensory needs met.
