DON’T FLUSH WET WIPES

Dunedin City Council —

Did you know that there are some things that are not safe to flush down the toilet?

It has become a concern lately that some residents are flushing unsanitary and unsafe items – such as wet wipes – down the toilet resulting in blocked drains. While convenient, flushing wet wipes poses significant risks to our infrastructure and environment.

When flushed into the sewage system, wet wipes tend to bind together and cause significant blockages. This often results in the overflow of wastewater from our network and leads to unsanitary conditions on our roads and public walkways. This also poses risk to the environment as contaminants and diluted waste material could find its way into streams and the harbour, or encroach upon private property.

There have been a few notable blockages in our waterways recently which we think were caused by wet wipes or other sanitary products being flushed into the wastewater system. Only pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet.

All other items, including wet wipes and absorbent materials or sanitary products, must be discarded in proper waste or sanitary bins.
